JOURNEY Camp is designed for all rising kindergarten through fifth grade children, with one week open only to rising 6th through 8th graders. Although we are equipped to accommodate more campers during each session, we believe we are only as successful as our ability to relate and respond to each child’s needs individually. This is not only crucial to the success of our program, but also directly proportional to the staff-to-camper ratio we maintain. As such, during our inaugural summer we will limit space to 15 campers each session. With direct supervision from Adult and Junior Counselors (rising 9th graders and up), 1:5 will be our maximum ratio at all times. As experts and specialists in various fields stop by to spend time with the children each week, as well as the potential for additional volunteer counselors to sign on, I anticipate our ratio will more likely average 1:4 – 1:3.
At various times during the week, other certified sensory and somatic specialists will join me in simply being present with your child to notice and support places that sensory issues may appear. Licensed practitioners of Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Therapy for the Hearing and Visually Impaired, and Massage Therapy, as well as specialists in music, dance, drama and art will be regular visitors at JOURNEY Camp. Some will lead the children through various planned activities and others will contribute their skills and offer support through observation and/or unstructured parallel play. Together, all of us will strive to create a balance between your child’s inner and outer worlds as we help them to organize the information each sensory system is taking in.
